Re: Cut MB from 36 to under 25 to enable email
Koz and Steve: Thanks for the additional detail. It pretty well confirmed my suspicions and corresponded to what I had previously understood. I just checked on some info. My average mp3 file size is almost exactly 4 MB and the average running time of my mp3s is 2'33. The catalog is split pretty equa...

Re: Cut MB from 36 to under 25 to enable email
In older versions of Audacity VBR was not available, so it was previously the case that mono or stereo files would always produce files of similar size. In Audacity 1.3.12 VBR is available, and with VBR the bit rate and file size for mono tracks will be around half of that for an equivalent stereo ...

Re: Cut MB from 36 to under 25 to enable email
The test you should be doing to verify the difference between mono encoding and stereo encoding is not comparing the output file to the input file, but comparing a mono output file to a stereo output file. Steve: I just did another test comparing mono output to stereo output as you advise above: So...

Re: Cut MB from 36 to under 25 to enable email
... If you export that show, the filesize should be almost exactly half... Only when exporting in an uncompressed format. When exporting in a lossy compressed format, the bit rate (and hence the file size) remains the same irrespective of the number of audio channels (see here: http://forum.audacit...

Re: Amplify vs Normalize parameters
Steve: Thanks for the comments. I think I will conduct some tests with mp3Gain out of curiosity. I'll have to find some specific source material that might be particularly revealing on this point. Regarding mono/stereo and normalize/amplify, your comments bring up another question I have been ponder...

Re: Sample rate discrepancy; what are the consequences?
It shouldn't make any difference (it doesn't on XP), but on Windows 7 many of the currently available sound card drivers suck and require this tweak. In cases where this tweak is required, either it won't record at all, or recording stops after a couple of seconds, or it records at completely the w...

Re: Amplify vs Normalize parameters
I enjoyed reading this thread and learned a few tricks. However, I have a possibly unusual situation: Perhaps 70% of my source material was originally recorded in the monaural era--pre 1960. It is typically 2 channel, but has the same signal in both channels. How is the choice between amplify and no...

Sample rate discrepancy; what are the consequences?
I am using Audacity 1.3.9 with Windows 7, with good results. I just found this in the Audacity documentation regarding sample rate or recording channel discrepancies: "To prevent possible sample rate or recording channel discrepancies, right-click again and click Properties then the Advanced tab, an...

Re: Soundcard to record "what you hear" in Win 7 with Audaci
So in a classic moment of weakness, I ordered it. LOL :D A remaining point of confusion on the Behringer is the choice of proper drivers. I have downloaded 4 different software packages from Behringer: I'm pretty sure that you don't need any of those for using the device with Audacity. "Asio4all" O...

Re: Soundcard to record "what you hear" in Win 7 with Audaci
Steve: I do have complaints about Creative driver support, but my comments were generally intended to comment on the problems with stereo mix and Windows 7 generally---particularly considering that it was not an issue at all several years ago with earlier operating systems. Since I last posted I wen...
