It might have something to do with clip boundaries? I have a 1 hour file with hundreds of clip boundaries, and it's excruciatingly slow to do any edits. It seemed like it was slower the further along I was in the file which finally made me suspect something. I tried using Edit -> Clip Boundaries -> ...
