I can confirm that more or less any other directory except the default directory works (assigned in audacity.cfg).
TempDir=<Secondary Drive>/Users/ghislain/Library/Application Support/audacity/SessionData -> FAIL
TempDir=<Secondary Drive>/Users/ghislain/Library/audacity/SessionData -> OK

Hi Steve, Audacity doesn't start up, so I'm unable to check anything from within Audacity. But I did find this "temp" folder at: <Secondary Drive>/Users/ghislain/Library/Application Support/audacity/SessionData Sharin & Permissions - allows Read & Write for ghislain(me) - all others (staff, everyone...

Same issue here
- user directory on secondary drive
- only audacity.cfg and SessionData folder get created
then startup failure.
Using MacOS 10.15.6
