I was puzzled, too. Turns out Steve's suggestion of re-booting the computer solved the problem. Welcome to W10! I never had such a problem with W7 or XP. I actually didn't "shut down" the computer, I "re-started" it. Those are two choices in W10. I've had problems before where install scripts didn't...

A friend of mine tried it on his W10 laptop. It's NOT happening for him. But he's running W10 Version 1809, Build 17763.737, Installed on 04/18/2019. Audacity version 2.1.2.

Audacity Slow & High CPU
My version of Audacity is exhibiting sluggishness and high CPU usage in certain situations. Specifically, startup is taking 30 seconds, 20% CPU. Additionally, going to Edit->Preferences is taking 45 seconds, 20% CPU. Same for File->Export->MP3. Once I get to the Export MP3 window, the actual export ...
