Audacity does not have "channel mapping", so (for example) to record channels 3 and 4, you need to set Audacity to record "4 channels". Audacity will then record channels 1,2,3 and 4. You can get a list of all devices that Audacity can see, from "Help menu > Audio Device Info". Great thanks! It isn't a problem for analogue recording + playback Are you sure it's not a problem? Have you been able to record from the optical input with anything? How did you enable / select the optical input? I don't have an optical input device to test, but the first thing that I would do is to open ALSA Mixer, and look to see if the device appears as a capture (recording) device.
