Re: Label Sounds not analyzing audio
In the absence of presets, perhaps the manual could suggest some ball-park settings for a few different tasks. What do you think? I think that would be an excellent idea. I do realize that my very limited use of Audacity is a small part of all the many different things that other users are doing. T...

Re: Label Sounds not analyzing audio
Are you aware that you can save your favourite settings as "presets"? (Click on the "Manage" button) Yes, and I do have separate profiles saved for each of my main source files. I just wanted to offer an alternative "starting point" for anyone who was finding that the defaults were not working well...

Re: Distorted Recordings
I do not know the history of your computer and how you have done recordings in the past, so if it all used to work for you, maybe these comments will not apply, but I will offer my experience anyway. As Steve already said, selecting the correct "Recording Device" in Audacity can make a huge differen...

Re: Label Sounds not analyzing audio
Just wanted to update this thread with my current results (since I posted above about how poor I found this tool on initial testing). I am now very pleased with this tool and no longer even think about using the old Silence Finder. Bottom line is that I have found settings that work VERY well for me...

Re: Label Sounds not analyzing audio
The defaults seem reasonable to me. They are based on the defaults for the old Sound / Silence Finder effects. In my very limited tests so far, they are completely and totally unusable. But I am not trying to say they are just flat bad default settings, just that what I have seen so far makes me wo...

Re: Normalize by Track or by Album? Opinions please
As you probably know, normalizing won't fix that because normalizing uses the peak levels and "loudness" does not correlate well with peaks. There is WaveGain and MP3Gain which "permanently" adjust the loudness of the file so the player doesn't have to do anything special. Yes, I do understand the ...

Normalize by Track or by Album? Opinions please
This is not really a specific Audacity issue, but I have a constant internal (to my own head) debate on this issue. And there is another somewhat-related Audacity issue that I have just started seeing. I ripped all my CD library many years ago, mostly just using Windows Media Player. I recently got ...

Re: Label Sounds not analyzing audio
Thanx Steve - your comments give me hope. I have written down the settings that I finally found to work on that one test album, so I look forward to doing more testing after the fix comes out. Before this discussion, I wasn't sure I would ever touch it again, so yeah, first impression was really bad...

Re: Label Sounds not analyzing audio
I guess I'll reserve too many comments on this until we are told the bug is fixed, but when I started trying to use Label Sounds, I found it VERY fussy, confusing, and unreliable. After many many tests with different settings, I did get it to properly mark most of the tracks on one album. In contras...

Re: RECORDING at 16 bit vs internal 32-bit float?
I really appreciate the answers here - I used to think I knew most of this stuff, but I am getting kinda old, and I cannot tell the difference between what I have forgotten and what I just no longer think might be true! While I had some reasonably high-end kit back in the 70s, I know all that stuff ...
