Re: Audacity freezes at startup and its logo remains frozen in the screen
Footnote ... . OK, I thought, the problem's gone away; better get on with some work. So restarted the machine, plugged in all the encrypted repositories and fired up Audacity. Set all my defaults in preferences (devices, playthrough) and resized the window. Right, now I'll just check all's OK: close...

Re: Audacity freezes at startup and its logo remains frozen in the screen
Having read the post by OliverJames and particularly the bit where he says "audacity runs perfectly (kernel 4.15.0-88)" I thought I'd do some more testing and poking about. Yesterday I ran Audacity all day (about 10 hours)without closing the program but working on many different projects (.aup and d...

Re: Audacity freezes at startup and its logo remains frozen in the screen
Hope this is not too far off topic to be of interest, but given previous posts about kernel versions, I've just done an out-of-the box re-install of Xubuntu 18.04 with kernel 4.15.0-88. Audacity 2.2.1 from the repo starts fine first time but if I close it and want to restart it, it hangs in exactly ...

Re: Why is WinXP better at running Audacity than Xubuntu?
Good thinking, Steve. WinXP indexing is disabled on the NTFS drives. I've had a look at Xubuntu and the file system specs and can't immediately see a place to disable background indexing. However, it had occurred to me that ext2 might be quicker than other file systems. At the moment everything is o...

Re: Why is WinXP better at running Audacity than Xubuntu?
I guess it's because my setup on the Inspiron1300 is marginal that any differences show up. Both systems on the Inspiron are pretty pared down but I guess XP (being older) is less heavy on the graphics which is where the old box falls down. I've found that there's quite a lot goes on graphics-wise e...

Re: Why is WinXP better at running Audacity than Xubuntu?
Yes I am using EZcap as that's the only cassette transport I have with a digital/USB output. Father Christmas brought it a couple of years back and I've never got round to using it before. As it's low mileage as compared with the analogue kit I have, the reproduction is a million times better. It co...

Re: Why is WinXP better at running Audacity than Xubuntu?
Thanks again for your replies to my original post. A bit more info on the Xubuntu issue ... There are several things one can do to make it slicker. The first is to choose apps carefully. For example most of the time I use Midori unless I need the bells and whistles (and security add-ons) of Firefox....

Re: Why is WinXP better at running Audacity than Xubuntu?
These are really interesting replies which I have not had chance to digest properly yet. However, for info, I have tried Lubuntu but the performance gains over Xubuntu were trivial compared with the benefits of having the same build across 5 out of 6 machines, the exception being the Packard Bell wh...

Why is WinXP better at running Audacity than Xubuntu?
I have a collection of some 200 audio cassettes going back many years which I want to transfer to MP3 files. I've solved (thanks to Steve) the problem of getting reasonable reproduction without periodic gaps of 25ms every 0.6 secs but so far this requires me to use either my regular desktop box or t...
