I had this same problem 2 years ago when I had upgraded to Xubuntu 16.04 and whatever version of Audacity was being used then. However, the problem was never resolved. So, I went back to Xubuntu 14.04 and Audacity 2.0.5. Since 18.04 is now out, I decided to try again. This is running Audacity 2.2.1....

I use Xubuntu. Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu (and others) all use the same kernel and can run all of the same programs. The difference is the desktop. In the clipping one I see that you have the input (pic of microphone) all the way up? Try reducing that until no clipping seen. I would rather have it a little low and then raise the level after recorded.

The JOY has returned. Went back to Xubuntu 14.04 and Audacity 2.0.5 on a 3.0 dual core with 4 gig RAM. No SSD: just 7,200 RPM spinner. Recorded 18 channels at 44.1 with no distortion.

I was reading on Reaper's site that it works well in WINE. So, on my home machine I installed it in WINE and played with it to get used to using it. I will try and get it installed in WINE on the machine at church and see how it works there.
