Adjust volume of sections of a track

Is there any way that I can adjust the volume level of a portion of a track?
And, can this be used to eliminate clipping?

Editing a pre-recorded track
Audacity 2.0.6 on Windows XP I am recording piano and voice with separate mics, using a Mackie mixer. I am panning the piano to the right; vocal to the left, so that I can easily adjust volume of the mix. There are probably more sophisticated ways of doing this, maybe with normalize? My question is ...
