Re: Shaded waveform view (when zoomed out)
If in the current waveform there is no waveform at a given x/y point, and in your waveform there is, I think this will be really confusing to many users. Sure. But it would be the other way round. Pixels would be attenuated that are fully visible in Audacity's view. The peak and RMS level at a give...

Re: Shaded waveform view (when zoomed out)
what do you think about a waveform colored accoring to frequency as described previously? You mean according to where your shadings suggest frequency changes occur? No, I'm refering to Robert's post and my picking up of the ideas (see end of post) . Is there only RMS as a potentially valuable infor...

Re: Shaded waveform view (when zoomed out)
Are you showing separate positive and negative average values here? Yes, average is per pixel column and can jump up and down when interference with the underlying wave cycles occurs (as it is with Audacity's waveform view). Where is the average in the third and fourth blocks of sound (right of cen...

Re: Shaded waveform view (when zoomed out)
I found out some facts: The shades represent the time consumed by the corresponding amplitudes--the darker the more time consumed. Sorry I do not understand what you mean by time. Are we talking within one pixel width or beyond it? I was talking of just one pixel column. By time I mean the duration...

Re: Shaded waveform view (when zoomed out)
I attached the converter program to the first post so first-readers may use it right away. OK thanks, I must have missed it right at the bottom. It seems it is limited to mono files and the first few seconds of audio. No, you did't miss it. I attached it at the time of this writing. Yes, it's limit...

Re: Shaded waveform view (when zoomed out)
But the proposal does not involve adding a spectrogram to the new waveform view, for example in the vertical scale, does it? Although I can sense lighter and darker shades in the waveform, I have no frequency reference against which to compare those different shades - if indeed the shades do always...

Re: Shaded waveform view (when zoomed out)
Of course, I'm not a long-time user of these waveforms. So I just can try to outline possible benefits. I can't think of better points than already told, right now: Can make you faster in navigating a waveform because of more hints/a waveform shape with an additional informational dimension Manifest...

Re: Shaded waveform view (when zoomed out)
You mixed some frequencies to get the sounds. The amplitudes of these are clearly visible: Both waveforms were created by mixing 3 tones of equal amplitude with frequencies of 440 Hz, 660 Hz and 880 Hz. The difference between the two waveforms is the phase of the tones. Okay, I understand. But you ...

Re: Shaded waveform view (when zoomed out)
So whereas the current waveform view shows my not only the peak amplitude (both positive and negative) but also the RMS level (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amplitude#Root_mean_square_amplitude), the new algorithm shows the peak amplitude (positive and negative) and some pretty colours. Can I d...

Re: Shaded waveform view (when zoomed out)
Given there is no spectrogram I wouldn't know how to interpret that unless you told me. I had attached a spectrogram. Here's Audacity's presentation of the data (to view the full image drag it into another browser tab): By the way: Did you two even discover the attachments of my second post? (I see...
