Your Audacity version and Windows version are really necessary to trace this kind of problem.

Static noise like that can come from USB transmission. It's very dependent on drivers and system software.

The easiest way probably is Audio Hijack Pro (49$):

Jack OSX (free) can do it to, but is more complex to set up than Soundflower.

Yes, Koz, there are books. :D And some of these even touch subjects such as "Alternate data streams". But I've never encountered anyone who understands what they really are. Most books don't even touch the subject. I don't know any software that uses ADS, except for one very old, very nast...
