Re: Background noise while recording cassette

If you shop around, the UCA202 could be on sale for around 15$, as it's going to be replaced with a newer model.

Re: Track selection from single source during recording?

My stupid-but-simple solution would be to record one track with all performances, then save it as a wav file. Next, make a new project with 8 tracks and import the complete performance on each track. After that, replace one performer in each track with silence. Export each track separately as a wav ...

Re: Background noise while recording cassette

I'm afraid all "solutions" will be rather technical. The problem you're dealing with is tape noise (hiss). It's in the original tape and there's not much you can do about it. Adding to your pain is a USB whine, which is due to the quality of the USB player, I think. Macs in general don't h...

Re: opening more than 1 program

I've read that Wiki page... While I agree you can do funky stuff like recording in a VM simultaneously with a recording in the native OS, my first thought was that WE can, but the majority of Audacity users can't. If you're careful and experienced, a lot of funky stuff is possible. I you want it to ...

Re: Converting file to wav. form

Is your recording in "stop" mode, or in "pause" mode?

I don't think exporting works in pause. But I don't have an Audacity install on this machine to check...

Re: conversion of wav into smf

Audio to midi conversion has been covered several times before:

The general feeling is that it only works if there is one instrument in the recording.

Most people expect more. I don't know what the plan is...

Re: Generating and playing ultrasound

If all you need to do, is test a bat detector, 100 mW will be plenty.

At that level, no risk of burning something out, even when the amp would oscillate badly.

I wonder if there's a trick to tune piezo beepers up. These are something lke 90dB @ 4 KHz @ 5V. Could you detune to let's say 40 kHz?

Re: 24-Bit Recording Status

These people are wrong. I suppose they don't even know what 24 bit means. All they understand is that "24" is bigger than "16" and they believe it sounds better. Internally, Audacity works at 32 bit, to avoid any quality loss. If you have a very good soundcard, you can record at ...

Re: stuck getting cassette tape sound into Audacity

If you need to copy the incoming sound from the cassette to your amplifier, the simplest way is to use "Line In", a free application from Rogue Amoeba:

Soundflower can do that to, as can JackOSX, but both require configuration.

Re: Generating and playing ultrasound

If your soundcard really supports 192 kHz, the upper range is half, theoretically. 96 kHz. In practice, filtering would give you a little less, let's say 95 kHz... The amp will follow effortlessly, unless filtered, as Koz said. And a lot of them are filtered. But no average speaker goes up to 30 kHz...
