Re: Can Audacity Remember a Microphone?
OS X provides plenty of ways to mess that up :( It's not OSX that messes that up... It's default hardware behaviour for power saving. Better devices signal that they go to sleep. Lesser devices don't, so the OS isn't aware they're sleeping. Most pro gear never sleeps anyway. And the problem is even...

Re: Audacity becomes completely unresponsive
Ericcartman only has 2GB of RAM . That's what I seemed to remember. It's not even enough for installing El Capitan without resorting to tricks. Been there, done that. But not for users that record audio or handle video. That would require a slimmed down setup and that is an awful lot of tedious work.

Re: Audacity becomes completely unresponsive
Did you see the beachball? I'm guessing it's not CPU related, but RAM related. It could be you system running out of ram. Swapping out to disk can cause serious delays. The first thing to check is if there are any background tasks not needed that are running. I'l thinking of stuff like the HP scanne...

Re: Audacity keeps crashing/hanging when I try to record w/m
That explains why you should no longer have to defragment manually. And that works very well, as long as your disk isn't completely full...ericcartman wrote:https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT1375
Besides, the article was written in OSX 10.3 days, so I doubt they had SSD's back then

Re: Audacity keeps crashing/hanging when I try to record w/m
thanks Cyrano, actually I have an SSD I'm fairly sure defragmentation doesn't apply to those. But nonetheless, it's about time that I cleared a few GB out of that hard drive. Whatever gave you that idea? SSD's can be a little different, depending on design of the controller, but they suffer from fi...

Re: Audacity keeps crashing/hanging when I try to record w/m
I have no idea if the ACX plugin needs that much space for temp files. But Audacity needs it, for temp files and for "undo" purposes. And the amount needed is sometimes overwhelming... OSX also needs free space, to defragment your files. If there is not enough space left, you'll end up with a very s...

Re: Audacity keeps crashing/hanging when I try to record w/m
...still on 10.11.2 because I haven't got round to making space for the latest iteration of El Capitan. If your harddisk is that full, you don't need to look much further, imho. The ACX plugin crashes because it can't make temp files and the same goes for recording. The rule of thumb says that you ...

Re: USB pre-amp with direct monitor for electret microphone
In stead of a battery box, I use a phantom-to-pip adapter. Here's the schematic: http://3riotech.be/PhantomAdaptor.PNG You could use a 9V zener (D1) to lower the output to less than 10V if you think your mic wouldn't be able to withstand 12V. The lowest noise is produced with a 5.6V zener. Higher pi...

Re: Audacity keeps crashing/hanging when I try to record w/m
I feel you should update El Captian to 10.11.6. There was a USB problem with previous releases and updating should fix this.
