Re: Unable to reduce input level from USB TT
Honestly, most of these USB turntables euhmmm... suck bigtime. You're much better off with a decent mic preamp*, even without RIAA correction. You can do that in Audacity. And ART is one of these brands with good quality, good price and no attitude. I used to use Trichord Dino phono preamp, until on...

Re: import format
I don't use Mac OS X, but for Windows and Linux you can right click on the file and view "properties", or for more detailed information use a third party application such as MediaInfo, dBPowerAmp or QuickTime. It's about the same for OSX. Select file, right click, CTRL-click or command-i. Select "m...

Re: Unable to reduce input level from USB TT
I don't know the Numark, but from what I've seen on other USB turntables, it could be there is a gain setting, only the implementation of it is not standard. If that's the case, it will be ignored completely by OSX. And if the Ion utility works, it's a sign that most of these turntables are Ion OEM'...

Re: Digitising classical LPs
If it's only for playback, CD quality is plenty. That's 16 bits, 44.1 KHz. I don't know high the sample rate from the Numark could be (haven't looked up the specs), but usually, CD quality is the setting out of the box. You should try out a couple of recordings to assertain the levels. Classical mus...

Re: Make voiceover with music
That mic deserves a better interface than the Shure X2U. http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/Heil-Sound/PR-40 The mic is specced at -54 dB. That's pretty low output. It's a cardiod, so you need to watch out for keeping the narrator's distance to the mic constant when recording. Unless you want pro...

Re: Cannot open any file in Audacity
I think Gale means to adjust some display settings to make Audacity more friendly with Macbooks with a Retina display. You could try simply quitting Audacity and deleting audacity.cfg in: ~/Library/Application Support/audacity/ Use the 'Go to Folder" function in the Finder menu "Go" to paste that in...

Re: COMPRESSION
If you try the compressor with default settings on a recording that is way too low in recording level, it acts as a sort of auto-gain. So I understand the semantic thing...
Could it be renamed to "Dynamic compander" to avoid semantic issues?

Re: How to remove clicking/popping
Your microphone and your Mac/Audacity are not syncing properly, I'm afraid. Removing this distortion is almost impossible. How long was your recording? Have you checked if the microphone and everything else is running on the same settings? e.g. all on 44.1 KHz, 24 bit. There's an Apple utility in Pr...
