Re: How important is it to have the level meter peaking at z
Wow, thanks so much for these responses. I have to admit my knowledge of the science of audio is pretty limited so its been great to read these detailed posts. My question has most definitley been answered. Can I happily record my mixes at -3 or -6 and not have to worry about it being too quiet or m...

Re: How important is it to have the level meter peaking at z
Ok, thats what I thought, I'm not really capturing 'live', I record mixes from my decks. I was just worried that if I wasn't recording at an 'optimum' level then I might not be getting the best out of the capture (if that makes sense!) So basically as long as its up around that end of the scale with...

How important is it to have the level meter peaking at zero?
Well the subject says it all really. I realise that you don't want it maxing out cos you get clipped audio but what is the ideal place where the meter's should be peaking. I ask because my USB sound card appears to need a much higher input in Linux than it did in windows. In windows I was able to tw...

Re: Cannot get equal Left and Right input levels
What a helpful response. Thank you. I really only want the device for recording from my mixing desk so it sounds like the behringer is ideal. I cant really see me ever needing to record sounds playing from the laptop but useful to know how to do it anyway. I wont need to connect a mic so thats no pr...

Re: Cannot get equal Left and Right input levels
Its funny you should mention the Behringer because that is the exact one I was looking at to replace this one. The 202 is very cheap compared to the one we have been discussing but I have heard it sounds ok. As you use it already i assume that it works fine with audacity? Maybe its time to stick the...

Re: Cannot get equal Left and Right input levels
Hey, I cant post a screenshot for a while because I'm on holiday now for a couple of weeks. When I first open alsamixer using the -c1 parameter the input mixer is at 0 (zero). I understand what you are saying regarding adjusting leves with the OS but I have definitley adjusted the input level in XP ...

Re: Cannot get equal Left and Right input levels
Been playing again today. If I start Audacity and select OSS:/dev/sound/dsp1 as the record device it will record equally but the levels are incredibly low. Now if I then open alsamixer with $alsamixer -c1 to open the controls for card 1 (the usb one) and adjust the line-in control the levels immedia...

Re: Cannot get equal Left and Right input levels
1. They are really far out, enough to notice on the output display meter, enough that the waveforms are noticeably lower and you can hear it when you listen to a recording. I can never get them close, trying to adjust the left and right seperately in alsamixer does nothing. 2. Thats the strange thin...

Re: Cannot get equal Left and Right input levels
Well my ultimate goal is to record mixes from my decks through my mixer. The output from the mixer is a proper 'Rec' output so the left and right are balanced. I have also tried recording straight from my MP3 player as well using the headphone socket with the output selected to 'line out', again wit...
