Still can't seem to get effects working. I have tried highlighting a track before recording and tried highlighting the track after recording. Still no effects.
Thanks for the 1.3 advice. I like some features much more.

recording goes to right channel and not stereo
Still a beginner with computer recording.....When recording original music (guitars, vocals, keyboard, etc.) everything goes into the right channel only. Sir Steve- May a thousand camels grace your caravan! I get sound now. Only one problem.....I put one guitar track down. When I try to put another on and play it back after recording, the two tracks are not in sync. The first track is about 1/2 second earlier than the first. Is there some kinda sync ...

I have used Audacity to convert cassette tapes to digital before. I have never been aboe to use it to record my own music through my M-audio device.

It is Firewire and not USB, and, yes it is in the control panel. It has also been configured in Audity. I promise I am not trying to be a smart "A", but please read my original post again. There is a good deal of system/setup info there.
