low volume and hum using mic

I have Audacity 2.0.3, Windows 7 Professional, Shure SM58 mic I've followed directions for settings and the mic will record on Audacity. However, with the input volume as high as it goes in Audacity and in settings, the input level meter shows a wavering -24 when all I'm doing is holding the mic in ...

Re: audio format for playing audio cd

"Strict, compatible Audio CDs will not carry song titles or anything but the music."

I don't understand this point. How is it that commercial CDs have track lists that normally read out on the player's screen? What do they use?

Re: audio format for playing audio cd

Thanks. Yes, I see it is a balancing act, benefit, convenience, etc. I will see how the CDs go.

Is there a particular program you'd recommend for putting a text listing on a CD?

Re: audio format for playing audio cd

Thank you for these detailed answers, they clear up a lot for me. To answer questions and remarks: "Are you suggesting someone on this Forum is giving you incorrect advice?" No. I was told various things by other people. "Your radio station should have an engineer or technician to help you with this...

Re: audio format for playing audio cd

Thank you. If I were at all astute, I wouldn't need to ask. But are you saying that if I burn the WAV files to a CD on the audio setting, the music should play on a regular CD player? Does the CD burner automatically convert the file from WAV to something else, and to what? Just for my understanding...

audio format for playing audio cd

I have been given conflicting info on what formats will play on an audio CD player. I'm a non-technical volunteer broadcaster on community radio. I was using mp3 on flash drives to play music on my radio shows, using the flash outlets on the audio CD players. I learned about how much quality loss th...

Re: Getting best quality audio from mp3 and mp4

Reply to DVDdoug The station doesn't have an on-air computer for playing audio. We have CD players which have flash drive outlets. They will play WAV from CD, but not from flash. Problem was labeling the WAV tracks on CD, and the extra time and expense of CDs, so I was using mp3 on flash. Now I'm ex...

Re: Getting best quality audio from mp3 and mp4

Reply to Steve Why is the default sample rate 44100? Is that best for my purposes? Can best quality cause stuttering when playing a completed file? I've read the article on dither. That's what I didn't understand. I don't know how these things apply to what I do, which is basically preparing various...

Re: Getting best quality audio from mp3 and mp4

Wow, that's great! It clears up a lot for me. For real time conversion, the default has medium quality, dither none. Why shouldn't I use best quality? I read about dither, but don't really understand it. Could the dither be desirable when recording imperfect mp3? I use the files for radio broadcast....
