Re: low volume and hum using mic

DVDdoug: "If you monitor yourself through the computer you can get latency (delay). Often this is can be minimized and managed, but it can become a "battle". You'll notice in Koz's photo of the Shure X2u, he has ear buds plugged-in. An interface like that with "zero-latency hardware monitoring" will...

Re: low volume and hum using mic

Audacity is set to "Microphone (2-USB PnP Sound)" There's only the one cord from mic to USB. Is the control part missing, or is this a different version, without controls? It cost $50, seems a lot for a simple adapter. Microphone level set to 100 in properties. With Audacity record on, input volume ...

Re: low volume and hum using mic

That + - thing is a thumbwheel and controls the volume of your microphone. Rub/Push toward + to get louder. The little switch on the side controls whether or not the Phantom Power is active (leave off). Koz It's called Track Link Microphone to USB Interface, XLR3F to USB Type A, but it's just the c...

Re: low volume and hum using mic

I think we're hitting it. Do you have one of these? http://hosatech.com/press-release/hosa-introduces-tracklink-microphone-usb-interface/ With a little fat pod with lights and controls on it (attached)? That control pod has a blue light that signifies the computer connection is good and it will fla...

Re: low volume and hum using mic

Xerlome: "The adapter they sold me was Hosa Technology, TrackLink Microphone to USB Interface, XLR3F to USB Type A" DVDdoug: "That should be OK... You shouldn't be getting such horrible results. I assume you turned-up the gain on the Hosa?" The Hosa is just an a USB adapter cord. Or do you mean in t...

Re: low volume and hum using mic

And one other quick note. Your first experiences with the microphone cable were completely bogus. I'm betting you were recording your laptop built-in microphone rather than your SM58. You do have a laptop, right? We never established that. Koz No, I have a standing computer, under two years old, qu...

Re: low volume and hum using mic

How loud is your normal talking voice? Varies, normal. Your point is a good one, I will try that. To Koz: All great info. The Zoom H2 looks interesting, may consider in future. Right now I do want to try a mic on USB, simple as possible. The rest will take time. I don't expect perfection, and the r...

Re: low volume and hum using mic

To Koz:

Yes, the sample you offered is not what I want. But this room is far from bare, darn full! My walls are still uncovered rock wool insulation.

Considering the point about USB mic audio issues, does this mean I may be better off keeping the Shure and getting a preamp?

Re: low volume and hum using mic

Thanks for the replies. To DVDdoug: The adapter they sold me was Hosa Technology, TrackLink Microphone to USB Interface, XLR3F to USB Type A To Koz: Is using the small mic plug as desirable as the USB? Is it really advisable to use an adapter at all, rather than an actual USB mic? To Steve: It does ...

Re: low volume and hum using mic

Thank you, Steve. I originally thought I'd order a Rode Podcaster, but the Shure was available locally at lower cost. Where I bought it, I was told that all it needed was a USB adapter cord and it would be fine. My use of the mic would be primarily to record talk which would be acceptable on radio, ...
