Re: Low file size
The usual recommended drill is to record such that your peak level falls between -6 and -10 dBFS. Then in post processing step A is to "normalize" the clip and put the peaks at -3.2dB (a little margin over the -3 max to allow for processing). If that leaves your RMS level too low then gentle applica...

Re: A good example of passing ACXCheck, but still producing
The limitations of acx-check are clearly stated both in the wiki page Wiki page and again in the comments in the the file itself. I don't know what Koz means about "all three numbers too low". As I read the "requirements, they want the RMS to be no lower than -23 dBFS, if that requirement is met the...

Re: Low file size
Is it possible you're looking at the .aup file? I wouldn't be surprising for that file to be quite small. It's a common beginner mistake to thing that the .aup file is the whole project -- it's not. It only is a list of pointers to other files where all the actual sound data is (typically in a folde...

Re: Setting levels and hearing my own voice on the recording
The microphone input on your laptop is designed for microphones and not "line level" signals. The difference is about a factor of 100 in voltage amplitude thus your observation of too loud and distorted signal. Further most of these inputs are Mono, and I would assume you would prefer to record your...

Re: Samson Meteor - Weird Disturbance
Gauging from the difference between the whine and the normal thermal noise of the microphone in your test recording your microphone is a lot worse than many cases we have seen here. I would say you should definitely talk to Samson (or the vendor you purchased the microphone from ) and ask for a repl...

Re: Concert Band Recording
I guess we might need some clarification about what tmgallagh means by a concert band . I agree. "Concert Band" to me is a troop of High-School kids with trumpet, clarinets, saxes,... all the way down to sousaphones and kettle drums. Very difficult to record without using a whole array of microphon...

Re: Shape of portable vocal booth matters?
I don't think there were any particular special spells -- just keep the walls and ceiling not parallel. The room Koz is referring to was a fairly large room probably 20'x15' so not sure how much the design is apropos a home recording booth. I would guess that the walls were 10-20 degrees off square,...

Re: What's the relationship between Hardware Gain control
With the Gain up full it's bouncing between about -57 and -62. So the iRig itself is generating noise. It's of course plugged into the Earphone socket of the Mac Mini, which also acts as the mic input. It's the way the iRig is made. No matter, I can get good sound out of it, and have already passed...

Re: What's the relationship between Hardware Gain control
Give what you've told us about your setup and Mic, I would say "Yes just leave the knob on the iRig turned all the way up. I wouldn't turn it down unless you see or hear clipping in the result, which is unlikely if you are just recording speech.

Re: low budget mic and speakers for conference calls
There are stand-alone audio conferencing units that were reasonably successful but I don't remember enough about them. Flynwill may know. We had a number of "chat 150" units from ClearOne at Koz's and my previous employment. They are not cheap but did seem to work pretty well. They can be interconn...
