Basic questn: why is my sound quality so bad?

I just installed Audacity on my Dell Dimension (antique) 4300, with WinXPSP2, and recorded one minute of sound from a tape I have, and the results were TERRIBLE. I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong, because when I play a CD on either of the 2 CD drives, the sound quality is very good. My PREFERENCES ...

Never mind previous question etc--figured it out. I was doing something stupid.

But now I have a different problem--the sound is really horrible, very tinny, even though I set the sampling rate at 96K or so. This time I think I'll spend more time with the tutorial before posting....

I have Windows XPSP2. I looked all over the folder in which Audacity is installed but I could not find any info on the version number, which is why I suppled the size and date of the .exe file.

Help!: how do I record in stereo?

I don't seem able to record a WAV file (from a cassette tape) in stereo, and can't figure out why it's not working. I hope someone can help me! I cannot figure out which version of FSR I'm using, except that the ar.exe file is 705 kb long and was created 06/29/07. The FAQ "How do I record in stereo?...
