If you are trying to use an external microphone you have to enable it in Windows audio devices,
then select it as the recording device in Audacity preferences: devices ...

Accidentally recording from the computer's internal mic ?, (& the tapping is the hard-drive noises ?).

That distortion could be Windows audio enhancements.
You need to turn those enhancements off, (in both the recording & playback tabs),

WASAPI should only record what's playing through your speakers/headphones.

There is silence finder which can mark the silent gap between tracks.
