Re: skipping
If it sounds like a second or a fraction of a second is occasionally missing, this means that Audacity is not able to write the audio to your disk fast enough to keep up with what it's recording ... http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Troubleshooting_Recordings#Skips At the risk of stating...

Bleed through ?
... it's almost ancient recording ... some parts of the tape are being repeated twice. If the original is tape then the repetition is possibly " bleed through " : where the magnetized pattern on the tape is transferred between adjacent layers in the spool. You could try googling "bleed through", "a...

If the repetition is quieter than the original sound (like a faint echo) then a gate may be able to get rid of them in the "silent" pauses between words where they are most obvious.

Re: Vocalization analysis
You can do some basic frequency analysis in Audacity using "Analyze menu > Plot Spectrum". This feature is much improved in the current 1.3 version of Audacity. Bear in mind that the frequency analysis in Audacity 1.3.11 can only process about 4 minutes maximum. So probably not a long enough to ana...

Re: Hum removal plug-in
Frequency Analysis of Wikipedia 50Hz mains hum.png Now I can see where Steve got the idea of only notching the odd harmonics up to 2kHz, as it would get rid of the worst offenders. What about notching all the harmonics, odd and even, but applying a deeper notch the odd ones than the even. Combine t...

Possibly "sound activated recording" ...abmasnd wrote:... Maybe it's called something else?
Don't tick the box I've coloured yellow.
If it is ticked Audacity will not record, ("cut out"), some of the silence between sounds when recording.
