Just noticed Audacity's screenshot tools aren't working with my 2-1-2 on Vista combination, e.g.

amplification and equalization are commutative , but that's not true of all audio processing effects.

there's a ~5kHz tone on the left channel and a ~15kHz [harmonic] on the right ... Correct, but they're very low level you could go a long time before you even notice them. Neither of those is the loud buzzing noise in the complaint. If I crank up the volume I can hear the ~5kHz noise : it's similar...
