but IMO they're only useful to reduce slight reverb, (your example is strong reverb).

There's a lot of reverberation on that.
Reverb(eration) is largely incurable. Expanders like couture can reduce it a little.
IMO sacrificing the bass & de-essing improves intelligibility ...

I still can hear the hissing sound in the background ... Maybe that's the best Ill be able to muster given my setup. No, the hum is not on the tape but on the recording.

Steve's de-hum filter is worth a try ... viewtopic.php?p=207481#p207481
but if the tape is not running at a constant speed you'll need a de-hum filter which tracks the varying frequency.
