Thanks, Steve. Just to test the "phase shift causes addition / subtraction" theory, I created a few tones (100 Hz and 400 Hz) with an amplitude of .9. A highpass at 70 Hz had no effect whatsoever. I'm using 2.1.0 but believe this problem happened in all 2.x versions. I start with a file that contains no amplitude overloading. No samples are in red in the waveform display. I sure wish we could disable the message. I listen to dozens of new mp3's at a time, and it's a pain to have to click on the message every exit. I would also prefer that there be a way to start playing automatically when I click on an mp3 file.

Yes to having Audacity 1.X installed. As to whether it was the default program for mp3, I think so but am not 100% sure.

Aftyer installation in Win 7 32 bit, Audacity does not apepar in the list of recommended programs that can be associated with mp3 file types as the default program. I click on "Browse" and then select Audacity.exe (in Program FilesAudacity) but nothing changes - Audacity does not become the default....
