Audacity recordings are unfortunately always 16 bit.
Wasapi and Wdm-ks are the exceptions.
Make sure that 24 bit is enabled via Windows control panel.
Asio might work too, I haven't tested that.

Yes, recording is probably the only functionality needed.
However, it should alternate between record and stop as it is currently the case with play.
