Steve, thanks for checking that. For thoroughness, my host is indeed Windows 7, I do have pulseaudio volume control (and the other controls) installed, I did verify that other applications (mplayer, iceweasel with flash) work correctly with pulseaudio by looking in the playback tab of volume control...
