Thanks Steve and PGA. I will do more testing. I have both XP and Linux boxes so I will try both of those as well as updating to the latest beta.

Steve, First, thanks for the tip that: "If you just want to activate the recording meter you can do that by clicking on it. Click on it again to deactivate." Who knew:) That is handy. Problem is that the noise is still there when you just click on the meter. And I doubled checked that exclusive mode...

First, I have input 8 options, 4 MME and 4 Direct Sound. They all have the same level of noise except the MME or Direct Sound "front mic" inputs (there is nothing plugged in) which raises the noise level to -54 db. The dithering option is an interesting possibility I hadn't thought of. So I read up ...

I have constant residual noise that fluctuates between -72 db and -84 db when I click pause and then record with 1.3.12 on a Windows 7 PC with the Audacity input all the way down to zero. After relocating cables, trying everything unplugged, plugged in but all gain controls muted or set to zero, sam...
