Well, I checked that and everything was it needed to be.
I even uninstalled that Audacity 1.3 and reinstalled it, but the problem was the same as before.
Could the problem lie with how the program recognises the devices, perhaps?

This sounds like an odd problem. Could you be more descriptive about "nothing works". If you import a know to be good audio file, doe it import correctly? (does its waveform appear in a new track?) When you press Play, what happens? Any error message? There are no error messages upon trying to play...
