After a thorough search i found no posts of use :( my only hope is to find a virtual mixing desk that i can use to turn down the echo (if such a thing would be possible)

Close Audacity, then plug in your USB headphones, wait a few moments for Windows to recognise the headphones, then restart Audacity. What if you change the "Host" setting?
the only other option there is windows direct sound and that puts the two other options to default. still works and still echo but not as bad ???

You'll have to help me "see" what's happening.... Did we check your Audacity version? It should be 1.3.13 (unicode) - look in the "Help menu > About Audacity" to check. Any your version of Windows is Vista? With the microphone connected and your USB headphones disconnected , reb...
