Bingo! I had to chose the settings
Conexant AMC Audio
USB Audio Codec.
During recording there is now sound from both laptop speakers or earphones. Great!
I'm going to play with the editing tool and all sorts of stuff now. Thanks for the help, I would never have unravelled it on my own.

My problem is solved. Audacity gives full stereo in XP. I still have no playback during recording, I have to remove the usb plug to get any sound. There must be a way, so I keep searching. But at least I can record.

are not in my Vista system, so I can't change what needs to be changed.
I have another notebook, with XP, maybe there the Audacity problem does not exist. I'll try it later today.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to try Nero... I found USB's in Devices Control, but can't do anything with them except updating/de-installing the drivers. I typed 'USB audio codec' in Vista's search machine and nothing turned up. I better wait until gerry tells us if he faired better.

I have the same problem, but I doubt that my connector is at fault. I bought a Lenco turntable specifically for digitalizing vinyl records, and it comes with a USB cable. Sound quality is OK, except for the MONO. I looked everywhere and of course I selected Stereo2 in Preferences, but in the toolbar...
