Yes, it's an MP3, confirmed by Quicktime.
My guess is that the iTunes 8 coder adds some info to the header that Audacity misinterprets.

I'm on a PowerBook G4 running Mac OS X 10.3.9. I use Audacity primarily to change tempo of a batch of files at a time. I had the same problem with 1.3.2 and now with 1.3.3. A chain I created reads the MP3 file, changes tempo, and exports it back as an MP3. Audacity eats up memory and temp file space...
