Had the same problem, and it turned out that a running skype instance (with no audio sessions on it, though) bothered audacity. After killing skype(crap) Audacity was started promtply and server it's purpose. Hope this helps other lost noobz like myself. P.S: this worked on: Ubuntu 11.04 64bit, Auda...
