Thanks waxcylinder. I have checked for a gain control on the turntable, but don't find one. I have queried Audio Technica about it. I have a similar problem with an Audio Technica AT-PL50 turntable with a built-in preamp. Even with line-in set to 2, I still get some clipping. Mikeymike, I would be very interested in the diagram you offered for your DIY volume knob -- or links to the websites with more explanation of how to build...

I am using the "line in", but have to turn down the input level to 2 in order to keep the VU meter in a normal range, and even with it that low I am getting places that clip. I was hoping someone had experience with either this turntable or the SigmaTel codec to help me figure out where the problem ...
