I've been using the "play and/or record using RAM" as a workaround for the time being. It did take a few mins to open a very large wav, but I guess that is to be expected. Will see how it goes.

It was working ok on default as best I could tell, I was not able to use it for very long before it had problems with a lack of space and had to change where it stored temporary files.

Audacity writes data as a lot of small files, so even though the NTFS drive is reasonably quick with large files it may not be performing very efficiently with lots of small files.
