My problem appears to have been the level on the mic input itself--didn't realize that even had volume, but it does and raising that from zero to 99 did the trick.

I'm doing something wrong. I was using a Griffin Technology PowerWave as an interface between my Kenwood turntable and my computer, and it gave me sound, but at about half the necessary volume to record.
