Progress at last! I got audio by simply setting the plaback selection in control panel audio to the internal sound card (SoundMAX audio HD). The caveat: you have to do that BEFORE you run Audacity! I've been there. Only two options when USB convertor plugged in: USB Audio CODE or SoundMAX HD Audio. Neither result in an audible signal (when volume turned on). G.

Thank you, that explains the greyed-out volume button. I am still in the dark, however, about the reason why I can't hear the music playing allthough the VU-meters are indicating that there is an audio signal. Is that normal to? Nothing is muted, all volumes are up, the gain button on the convertor ...

I have a similar experience as Jennifer. I bought a USB Audio Convertor from JB Systems (http://www.beglec.com/manuals/223-V2,1.pdf) which is accompanied with a CD containing Audacity 1.2.6. According to the JB Systems manual, after selecting USB audio CODEC in input/output in the "edit/preferences"...
