AHHHHHH. Thanks for the help. It turns out that the output was in fact, routed to play through the headphone jack in my preamp, and NOT the speakers on my laptop as I had originally thought.

I am recording using a Lexicon Alpha preamp, with Sennheiser e609 mic. My laptop is a Sony VAIO, running Windows 7 When I record I am getting wavelength bars as if Audacity is picking up what I am playing. But when I try to play it back to hear what I have just recorded I am getting no sound at all....
