Thanks for the reply. The clicking is about 5-6 times per second. It could still be sound card/other hardware related.

Thanks, fiddle, you provided the clue I needed to solve this conundrum. In the keyboard preferences, the letter Z was assigned to "find zero crossings". I cleared this short-cut and now the z works.

letter "z" doesn't work in label track
In typing in a lable for a new label track, for some reason the letter "z" won't work. A capital Z will work, but no a small z. I'm new to Audacity, so maybe I'm missing something, or is there a trick to this?
