Is it something to do with the backing track being an MP3 format? No. Audacity doesn't edit MP3. It converts everything to its own internal sound format. What do you have for a recording device? You have to be recording directly from your microphone or soundcard, not a made-up, fake device such as ...

Audacity famously will "lose" a device or connection if it becomes disabled or disconnected even for an instant while Audacity is running . Plug everything in as you had it working before and either restart Audacity, or Transport > Rescan... That will make Audacity go out and look. Can you...

That's it. I only got the select part. You can also click the first track (just right of the up arrow) and Shift + last track. All the tracks in the middle go, too."Tracks menu > Remove Tracks". You can also use this after "Ctrl + A" (Select All)
