Re: Plug ins do not show up
Right click on the Acx-check file, and select "Rename". This will show the full name of the file. If the file name is Acx-check.ny.txt, remove the ".txt" so that it is named Acx-check.ny. About that. Some of my machines fail to give me a "Rename" option when I Right-Cl...

Re: noise problem looking for suggestions.
XM 8500 Berringer You have to plug that into something like a mixer, preamp or interface and it can't be the Mic-In of your laptop. That's where 95% of the noise comes from. That's me using a Behringer UM2 preamp and USB Interface on the left. http://kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/MBP_StarbucksStudioSh...

Record a fresh track, don't do anything to it and post it.

Re: I need to add 10 seconds at the start of an .mp3
As you do that, you should think about how many times you'll be editing that sound. Every time you export or make a new MP3 out of an old one, the sound quality goes down. So when you make a new MP3 with the silent slug at the beginning, the quality of the music is slightly worse. If the performer m...

Re: Download for Single Band Parametric in Audacity not showing in Effects
This is the manual entry for installing VST plugins. https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/installing_effect_generator_and_analyzer_plug_ins_on_windows.html#vst_install Jury's out on whether or not they're supposed to be Dynamic Link Libraries (.dll) or not. I suspect not. That and some VSTs will neve...

Re: Error opening sound device
How long is the show? Did you connect or disconnect anything just before it failed? Did you take or make a Skype call right about then? This is the manual listing for your error. https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/faq_errors.html#sound_device I don't think this is it, but I can see one mismatch. Yo...

Re: Understanding sound levels
The iPhone wasn't me. No, that was me. It's the obvious test, right? If you have an iPhone, you don't need anything else but the quiet room and a computer to edit on later. It didn't work. Transferring the work to the computer was stupid hard to do and it sounded bad. I gotta be doing it wrong. So ...

Re: Understanding sound levels
Do the test as X-Y. Then, when the test arrives in Stereo (two blue waves) Tracks > Mix > Mix Stereo Down to Mono. That should give you a single blue wave with a mix of the best features of the microphones.

Re: Understanding sound levels
Yes, talk into the side with the display. Occasional peaks at -6dB to -10dB are just about right. You should be able to plug your headphones into the socket on the side and hear yourself in real time. That's another advantage of not being connected to the computer. That will help you keep an even vo...

I usually use the joke about publishing, making a fortune and retiring to a nice villa on the Mediterranean, but in your case, I think a nice beach-front cottage in Kill Devil Hills.
