Re: Any Way to Recover "Orphaned Files"?
And as a programmer the last thing I want to be is a burden. Hardly that. The support record goes to Ian in Hollywood (a real place) who wanted to read for audiobooks in his apartment. Just over a year and 39 forum chapters—and we succeeded. But he had a ton of interacting conventional problems and...

Re: Any Way to Recover "Orphaned Files"?
Like anything else I can try that might help? You're having an odd/serious problem with Audacity on Linux and the only real support is the forum. We would normally be waiting for someone to arrive that has the same machine config that you do to compare notes. This isn't a help desk although it can ...

Re: Output into 5.1 format
One option is Corel Video Studio We did it in Final Cut Pro. We had a little trick. If the DVD wasn't large enough for uncompressed PCM (standard stereo), we would create a two-channel Dolby "surround" and send that. Since it's compressed, it took up less space and since the PCM was missi...

Re: Output into 5.1 format
5.1 or "Dolby Surround" is a licensed process. There may be a "fake" way of producing surround similar to the "Lame" software to make MP3 files—also until recently a licensed process.

Re: Constant, very quiet clicking
once recorded I'm going to have a billion questions about how to get it to sound good and how to make myself sound less bad, eh? Two problems with that. ACX's goal is for you to sound as natural as possible "No Distractions" pops up several times in their instructions. That's what kills p...

Re: Red verticle lines on imported backing track.
The red lines indicate the sound at that tiny instant got too loud or close to being too loud. If you can't hear any damage, cracking, clicking, ticking or harsh noises, it's probably OK. If your show has a lot of red lines... http://kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/ShowClipping.jpg That's probably serio...

Your job doesn't work very well with conventional sound measuring techniques.

Re: Understanding sound levels
The RMS level is -25.5 db. That's impossible. The ACX Mastering Suite guarantees peak and RMS. The only crazy number is noise. Are you setting each tool according to the settings in the web page? https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Audiobook_Mastering Select the whole chapter. Effect > Equalization ...
