Re: Microphone picking up neighbor's AC
One thing that is puzzling me is that mains hum is usually at a very precise frequency, either 50 Hz or 60 Hz depending on country. In your samples, the hum appears to be around 59.2 Hz, but the first "harmonic" is almost dead on 120 Hz. Is there something unusual about your mains supply?...

Re: electronic chatter on recordings
There is an upside to this. Visualize a 45 degree angle from the top of the power line supports to the ground. That is the cone of protection. If your house is inside that zone, there is 0.00% chance you will be hit by lightning. We had an antenna "farm" in Washington DC covering the parki...

Re: electronic chatter on recordings
I'm in the highest room in the house, closest to the storm. ...and the power lines. I would stop shooting there. I know this isn't popular news, but if someone asked me to design a terrible place to record high quality voice, I would describe your house. I was called in to help solve buzz and inter...

Re: Microphone picking up neighbor's AC
There is a note about listening. It's not fair to go "Diving For Noise." Set the speaker or headphone volume for normal voice during the show and then roll it back to the noise at the beginning without changing anything . The noise at the beginning of the clip should be very nearly complet...

Re: Microphone picking up neighbor's AC
Here's an unedited sample of me reading for you, Koz. That came out well. First three sentences and confirmation 2/3 down. Screen Shot 2019-08-06 at 19.58.50.png tyrionMastered.wav I applied our three audiobook mastering tools. It took me 25 seconds. I counted. This is the abbreviated version (in y...

Re: electronic chatter on recordings
Could just be my own awesomeness literally pushing out into the universe. It could be, but it could also be a bit more serious than that. This is the kind of thing that makes people in the US embassies sick For No Known Reason. You hit the embassy with high power electrical signals that interfere w...

Re: Microphone picking up neighbor's AC
And koz, would you like me to record a 20~ second sample of me reading a book for you, or something a little longer? Since you will be producing a mono WAV instead of MP3, 20 second sound clip is all that will fit on the forum. If you go longer it will cut you off. Nobody cares if it ends perfectly...

Re: Microphone picking up neighbor's AC
I still don't have anything for Hard Limiter, however. It's Soft Limiter and it's been included in Audacity for at least the last two versions. Effect > Limiter and you should be able to find or make a panel that looks a lot like this. Screen Shot 2019-08-06 at 11.15.38.png Those are the settings f...

Re: Microphone picking up neighbor's AC
Did we ever find out which Audacity you have? The latest one is 2.3.2 and you can get it from here. https://www.audacityteam.org/download/ I’m also not really aware of how I’d use it; mine doesn’t have a “Soft Limit” preset So you may have an older Audacity with tools missing. Let’s say about a quar...

Re: Trying to remove the pop when muting and unmuting the mic while recording
In all the cases you supplied so far, the microphone is electronic and getting power from the interface or the computer. So you are not only muting the sound, you are also unplugging the power and plugging it back in. That's what's causing the pops. You might actually have better luck with another t...
