Where are you finding songs with large volume ranges? Commercial music is usually produced to be as loud as possible and no volume changes at all. If the header is smashed, there's no guarantee that the data isn't corrupted, too. Maybe the header is corrupted because the machine couldn't make a header that matched the bad data.

The laptop adapter changed at least twice in the last three years or so. I think the latest one is USB-C.
