Re: Compressor settings for live music w/ a few sharp peaks
You might start with these settings. These are the settings for audiobook processing which has very strict requirements for volume and peaks. They're in abbreviated form, but in general, they fill in the control panel settings top to bottom. Effect > RMS Normalize: Target RMS Level -20dB > OK. Effec...

Re: Compressor settings for live music w/ a few sharp peaks
Most of the Audacity tools work on sound tips and peaks, so setting loudness (not directly related to peaks) can be a challenge. You can try RMS Normalize . That one does directly affect loudness and follow that with Effect > Limiter with Soft Limit selected to tamp down extreme peaks like your exam...

I'd also like to use it for gaming In that one post you just made this enormously more complicated. Gaming is a special setup, internet sound is a special setup, recording your voice on a newer Mac is a special setup (if it works at all) and podcast production can be a challenge. Lenovo T520 laptop...

Re: Mains hum: notch filter alternative?
Never mind. If you're in a 50Hz country, it's a good bet you have on of those big, protected plugs with the fuses in it.non-polarized cord

Re: Mains hum: notch filter alternative?
reason for that 29 Hz noise Is the turntable multi-speed? Do both speeds do the same thing? I'm trying to think of a good way to actively search for the hum field. I went hum searching with a portable microphone system when I got tired of managing a very quiet hum in my studio. I was outfitted like...

Re: Bad Background Hum with SM57 & X2U Adapter
Thanks for the posting. There's still something of a battle. ACX likes all their chapters and readings to match, so don't change anything until you finish the book. If you're going to do an upgrade, do it between books. There was a posting from someone who had to move houses in the middle of a book ...

Re: Lost project file, data file only
Is there a pattern to how these data file chunks are named? The little AU files are intentionally randomly named. a bunch of 6-second chunks. The sound was always in tiny 6-second fragments. You need the Project Manager file (AUP) to put it all back together. Was this a raw capture or recording? Th...

Re: Mains hum: notch filter alternative?
Could a copper foil around -like a closed ring- help? It's less likely. That's more a Faraday Shield against electro-static effects. You need Magnetic Mud and that's where MuMetal comes in. It's expensive and even better, delicate. They warn you not to hammer it or cause physical stress or it will ...

Re: Poor sound using Zoom H1N as USB mic
Post back when you figure it out. You could try CD quality 44100, 16-bit as a test. Everybody supports that.

I use the somewhat gentler scratch test.

You should find out from the computer instructions where it's microphone is. This particular machine's microphone is just left of the left-hand shift key.
