Re: Noise floor pass/fail/pass/pass

I have a 3 monitor set up. Start Audacity and turn them all off. We're not trying for Academy Awards here. Just searching for noises. The front of large flat monitors can radiate electrical noise that you can't hear but can drive a microphone nuts. The fan on my Vaio laptop was running a bit Ahem. ...

Re: How do I lower my noise floor?

Voice volume is perfect. I can force the reading to work by adding stiff noise reduction in addition to Mastering. Screen Shot 2020-01-15 at 18.23.21.png But we really should figure out where the noise is coming from. I intentionally boosted the noise in this file. What in your room could cause that...

Re: Noise floor pass/fail/pass/pass

I got your posting to pass ACX with just normal mastering. But. You have two noise signatures in your work. One is 120Hz. You're in the US, right? That can be caused by LED, CFL, fluorescent lighting or regular lightbulbs on a dimmer. The other one is much higher pitch. 552Hz. I'm calling that one t...

Re: How do I lower my noise floor?

That's more better. I applied the three mastering tools... MasteringTools.png ...from here... https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Audiobook_Mastering ...and it passes ACX. Screen Shot 2020-01-15 at 10.34.51.png test2Mastered.wav Your original reading is still too quiet. Your original reading... Scree...

Re: How do I lower my noise floor?

The sample way exceeds proper background noise. I changed your sound test. I intentionally boosted the noise to make it easier to hear. What in your room could be making that noise? Air conditioner? Refrigerator? I don't think that's a computer fan, but it could be. That's way too loud for live read...

A word on listening. Can you hear the pop in the first segment "....level is PPoint five."

We're starting to see problems with earbuds or other wireless headphones. Some of them have processing and don't let you hear when you're making a mistake.

Re: which effects help with tunnel / far away sound?

This is the blue wave pattern I made as a voice test for a Zoom microphone. There's no processing other than cutting to shorten it left to right. The volume is about right.

That's the goal.

Re: which effects help with tunnel / far away sound?

That sounds like normal voice recording. Something you did prevented the evil, honky voice effect. The first third appears like a quiet but normal recording. The middle third has its volume boosted. The last third has had tone controls applied and doesn't sound very good, but isn't distorted. Adjust...

Re: Mastering with different voices / different pitch

I'm not exactly sure where to go with that. It's outside the design goals. Mastering is not a dynamic process. It doesn't try to change things minute by minute or voice by voice. It looks at the whole selection and turns the volume up and down once until overall RMS (loudness) meets specifications. ...
