Re: an unwanted tone
It is possible to cause Windows machines to play to themselves causing feedback similar to a microphone in a really bad lecture hall. eeeeEEEEEEEEEE. As above you must go through all your settings and close anything you're not using right at that time. If all else fails, turn off live monitoring or ...

Is this a "Say, Mr. Pepsi, what do you think about Coca Cola?" moment?
What happens if you ask about Audacity on their discussion board?
Just wondering.

Re: Save as MP3 - can't find LameLib (OSx)
It's not finding the lame library. It's finding the compressed and processed transmission package that's holding and protecting the lame library. If you double click on the file, it should volunteer to decompress itself into the real library file which then should be recognized by Audacity. Failing ...

Pre Record Audio Metering
If you click inside the red audio meters while you apply audio to the system, Audacity will cheerfully indicate to you what the level of the incoming audio is--even before you press record. This helps you set up your audio pathway, insure quality, and is an insanely handy tool. How do you tell when ...

Force Audacity to tell me Time Remaining
If you leave your cursor in one place long enough, Audacity will tell you the time remaining based on hard drive space and a little guesswork. I never figured out the formula for that, but assume I need to know NOW. How do I force that information?
I believe all three platforms do it.

Re: no playthrough
Just to cover the bases, download the Piano Trill from here:

...and play that. Can you hear it? That's a good six second test to make sure everything is working. If you can't hear it, then we get to do more work.

Re: no playthrough
<<<I have no sound at all whether monitoring, recording or playing back within Audacity. >>> That's not normal. After recording a clip, you should be able to play it back, the green meters should move, and the speakers or headphones should activate. <<<Recording takes place but the green level meter...

Re: reducing audio storage
As I recall, changing between stereo and mono isn't that easy. It's not a clicky. If you didn't involve cutting and pasting, what you got was a mono show inside a stereo wrapper which is another reason the size didn't change. Highlight the work, cut and paste it into a whole new mono timeline/projec...

Re: Recording from TV
Audacity defaults to recording in mono. Change it with the settings in Audacity, Preferences, Audio I/O. Some Audacities make you restart before the changes take affect.

Re: Monaural output from recording sources?
Missed one. Since you're in Windows, you also have to make sure the sound control panel is set correctly. There are two and it's a little wacky to get to the record panel. The playback panel comes up immediately. Make sure all the pan controls are set to the middle and the record control for the cor...
