Re: how do i insall a mic
<<<anything about your computer>>> If you're on a Mac laptop, you launch Audacity and talk into the built-in microphone. Export it as a WAV file, open it in iTunes and sync to your iPod. If you're on a Windows machine, there's a $25 Radio Shack microphone we use for just about everything and it work...

Re: Large file loads, is invisible, does not play
<<<just can't get the 2 gig file to show>>>
Which Windows are you using? The classic Windows 2G file size limit comes to mind. I know it's not supposed to get in the way any more. But there's still a speed bump there.

Re: Split two voices from one file
<<<Short answer: You can't.>>> I'm with him. You can change it, but you might not be able to make it better. If the quieter voice was about the same volume as some of the room noises, then the voice and noise are going to come up together by using the volume compressor tool. You can even get exotic....

Re: Sound Soap w/Audacity
I'm going to have to get my Sound Soap license out of the garage to resolve this one, but until I do that, what problem are we solving with SS?
You connected two things that have nothing to do with each other. "I'm transferring my vinyl and I need Sound Soap."
Where did Toast go?

<<<I've got plenty of disk space available>>>
Define "plenty."
When Audacity decodes that file to edit it, the resulting buffer file could be 30G.

Re: restart after pause, go back two seconds
I'm not sure if this happens every time, but if you select in the middle of a passage, then press the spacebar, it will play from that point and keep returning if you press it again. If you press left arrow, it will move the cursor to the left--earlier in the performance. The one piece missing--and ...

Re: restart after pause, go back two seconds
eventually, I'll get tired of dancing around it.
"L" will loop and "1" will play a selection half-second before and half-second after the cursor.

Re: restart after pause, go back two seconds
I'm sure this is old news, but the "P" key will pause the playback. I haven't figured out the reverse part yet.

Re: restart after pause, go back two seconds
The markers and the cursor don't cooperate, do they? I thought there was a way to fake that with the existing Hot Keys. I didn't look at the idea of programming your own Hot Keys. I believe you can do that. You are going to run into one of my favorite Missing Tools. You can't type "-200 [enter]...

Re: selecting input & output
You should be able to set that in Apple, System Preferences, Hardware, Sound. Audacity doesn't always talk to the Mac device managers. The USB device should show up there in addition to Internal Microphone and Line In.
