Re: Problem opening data file...
<<<some data from a podcast >>> Waxy is assuming you mean sending a sound file even though you didn't actually say that. Is that what you meant? He needs to export the show as a WAV (very large, no damage) or an MP3 (much smaller, some damage) and send that. If he wants to send you a whole project, ...

Re: Recording Phone calls
Total Recorder and Audacity?
Windows is supposed to be a Multi-Tasking, Multi-User, do dah, do dah, but you quickly find out that isn't nearly as true as it is in the other OSs.
You may be able to get Total Recorder to do everything, but it's not free.

<<<I want to normalise them to the same average volume>>> <<<change the relative balance between stereo channels >>> <<<Any way to do that?>>> Yes. By hand, using the gain tools. The hard part is not using the tools, it's metering. You need a top quality sound system and real ANSI C16.5 VU meters. T...

Re: re: Lossey compression & quality degradation
People have designed extensive tricks to minimize the damage, but no, every time you change something in the file however slight, the quality of the performance degrades. The problem comes from the inability to edit in most compression schemes, so they have to be decompressed back down to "real...

Re: Feature differences between 1.2.5 and 1.2.6
I don't think they're crossable. 1.2.5 is running on my Intel machine and 1.2.6 and 1.2.4 are running on the PowerPC machines.
Crossing them seems to work until you enter the nightmare of adding the MP3 software.

Re: Recording Phone calls
You know you can open two Audacitys, right? I don't mean 1.2.6 and 1.3.3 although that might work, too. I mean click on the launch icon twice. I get two control panels. I don't know if they will record like that, but it's worth a shot. This may be where the Linux and Mac installs have it over the Wi...

Re: new digital voice recorder
Congrats. The down side of doing it that way is that the original "capture" audio may have already been compressed using either MP3, MP4, or one of the newer sound compressors. When you rescued the performance to MP3, you may have double-compressed it. That never sounds very good. Try resc...

Re: Using Audacity to equalize tracks prior to burning
First, you know you can get the timeline to read in dB under the black down arrow on the left. You can make the timeline really tall by grabbing the bottom with the mouse and pull down. Download the Piano Trill from here. It's 6 seconds so we don't have to sit through three minutes to experiment. ht...

Thank you. Now I gotta read it again to ask intelligent questions.
