There's too many holes in the question.

After recording my live guitar performance, Audacity exports MP3 files the right length but with no audio. The original capture files are OK.

Am I close?

I'm trying to figure out how to get the bubbling. Select the clip and export MP3, but pick the worst possible quality. That should give you a very bubbly voice. If it's important for work, I would export as a WAV file and save that somewhere that it's safe. If your system starts becoming unstable, you could flush the whole project and it's good to have a backup. Because of where you posted, we don't know if you're on Windows or not. Are you? Vista?
